On October 1, between approximately 5:41 PM and 9:58 AM EDT, some Vimeo OTT users experienced intermittent downtime and loss of key functionality, including the ability to log in, update or manage their accounts, and play videos. Some users may continue to experience delayed or incomplete analytics reporting.
Vimeo OTT was undergoing a planned migration to a new technical infrastructure at this time. Although we thoroughly organized and rehearsed the migration, some components and pathways didn’t receive adequate attention in the process.
While the migration was underway, configuration issues surfaced at both the data and content delivery network (CDN) layers. We also ran into unexpected challenges between our applications and the database connection pooling service. These combined factors caused temporary service interruptions for some users.
Because our engineers were overseeing the infrastructure migration, they became immediately aware of each issue as it arose. We worked through these in turn to identify root causes and implement fixes in real time.
Platform migrations of this nature are rare, so the conditions that contributed to this outage aren’t likely to recur. That said, we’re thoroughly reviewing our migration strategy so that we can better anticipate any challenges the next time and ensure that our team is capable of responding quickly and efficiently.
